Sub-Zero Refrigerator Not Cooling: 5 Common Causes
A Sub-Zero refrigerator that stops cooling is stressful — especially with a fridge full of groceries. Before you panic, here are the five most common causes we see on service calls across Dublin, Pleasanton, and the surrounding area.
1. Dirty Condenser Coils
Sub-Zero units have their condenser on top, behind the grille. When dust and pet hair build up, the compressor works harder and cooling drops. If your fridge runs constantly but stays warm, this is the first thing to check. Cleaning the condenser every 6–12 months prevents most cooling complaints.
2. Failed Evaporator Fan
No airflow means no cooling, even if the compressor runs fine. Signs: the freezer works but the fridge section is warm, or you hear unusual silence where a fan hum used to be. On dual-compressor Sub-Zero models, each compartment has its own evaporator — so one side can fail while the other works.
3. Faulty Thermistor or Temperature Sensor
If the sensor misreads the temperature, the control board never tells the compressor to kick in. This one is tricky to diagnose without a multimeter and the model’s service specs — guessing wrong gets expensive on a Sub-Zero.
4. Sealed System Leak
Refrigerant leaks are the serious one. Symptoms: gradual warming over days or weeks, compressor running non-stop, sometimes a faint oily residue near the evaporator. Sealed-system work requires EPA certification and specialized equipment — this is never a DIY job.
5. Control Board Failure
Power surges can fry the main control board. If the display is dead or behaves erratically along with the cooling problem, the board is a prime suspect.
When to Call a Professional
If cleaning the condenser grille doesn’t fix it within a few hours, stop troubleshooting. Sub-Zero units are built differently from standard fridges — wrong parts or wrong procedures cause expensive damage.
